Insuring Love: Why Planning Matters More Than Hope

February is Insure Your Love Month, a reminder that protecting the people we care about takes more than good intentions—it takes planning. In this article, I share my family’s personal story, including how a missed beneficiary update changed everything after my stepfather passed away while I was on active duty in the Navy.

I also explain why life insurance isn’t just about premiums—it’s about insurability—and how age, health, and lifestyle factors can impact your ability to qualify. As a veteran, I see firsthand how service-related medical conditions prevent many of my fellow veterans from accessing coverage, often because they weren’t aware of programs like SGLI and VGLI or the importance of acting within specific timeframes.

Life insurance today offers much more than protection after a loss. It can include living benefits, disability protection, critical illness coverage, and options to help address long-term care needs. It’s a tool used to protect individuals, families, and businesses through many of life’s challenges.

The lottery isn’t a retirement plan, and crowdfunding isn’t life insurance. Real protection starts with a plan—and that plan begins with a conversation.

If you’ve been putting it off, now is the time to talk.
