In this article, I share my family’s personal story, including how a missed beneficiary update changed everything after my stepfather passed away while I was on active duty in the Navy.

           Marc Sigmon, agent and CEO of Marc Sigmon Insurance Agency LLC and the NAIFA-California, San Diego Affiliate Leader, joined around 500 other professional insurance and financial advisers, agents, brokers and employee benefits specialists from across California and the United States to attend the NAIFA Congressional Conference, an annual political advocacy event held by the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors.

           Sigmon, a dedicated NAIFA member since 2020, attended his fourth Congressional Conference, May 20-21. His active participation in advocacy training and comprehensive briefings on issues crucial to his business and the consumers he serves underscores his commitment to staying informed and prepared.

Mike Levin, CA-48; Dillon Cook, senior legislative assistant for Rep. Scott Peters, CA-50; Michael Rivas, legislative assistant for Rep.            Sigmon's role in leading meetings with other California constituents with both Andrew Baratta, legislative correspondent for U.S. Sen.            Military appreciation means different things to different people. To some, it may mean thanking military members for their service. The court designates a relative as a guardian (sometimes referred to as a conservator) for Mark until he is legally an adult. By the time Mark reaches his eighteenth birthday, his inheritance has been partially spent on court costs, attorney’s fees, and guardian’s fees. In addition, its value has not kept pace with inflation because of the limited investment options available to guardians. Dawn had hoped that the life insurance proceeds would be open to pay for Mark’s college expenses, but there is less money available to Mark because of the costs and lack of investment flexibility. Mark receives the remaining funds, spends them frivolously, and has nothing left within a year or two.

           A common method for leaving money and property to loved ones in an estate plan is by titling assets, so they are owned by the trust or making the trust the beneficiary of the account or property, with a spouse or child as the trust’s beneficiaries. The same approach may also be used for life insurance policy proceeds. Two popular ways to achieve this result are naming a revocable living trust as a beneficiary and setting up an irrevocable life insurance trust.

           An irrevocable life insurance trust is an added layer of protection because it can own the life insurance policy and be named the beneficiary. You can create an irrevocable life insurance trust by transferring ownership of an existing policy into the trust or purchasing a new policy. You make cash gifts to the trust to pay the insurance premiums using your annual gift tax exclusion. Upon your death, the trust receives the death benefit, and the trustee distributes the money according to the instructions in the trust document. This strategy also allows you to remove the value of the life insurance policy and the death benefit from your taxable estate.

           Today, the Centers for Medicare &amp;amp; Medicaid Services (CMS) released a report showing the trend of lower premiums and increased issuer participation for HealthCare.gov will continue for plan year 2021. The average premium for the second lowest cost silver plan (also called the benchmark plan) dropped by 2% for the 2021 coverage year and, when looking at states that are using HealthCare.gov in both 2020 and 2021, 22 more issuers will offer coverage in 2021, for a total of 181 issuers delivering more choice and competition for consumers.            As I began my journey into the civilian world after a 20 year career in the United States Navy, I often felt like I was drinking from a firehose. Most veterans and military who have served understand the massive amount of water that flows at one time from a firehose to combat fires onboard naval vessels. How in the world do we make the right decision when so much information is being thrown at us?

            Throughout my time in service, I was usually asked three basic questions when it came to my financial situation.

            First, did I update my page 2 in my service record.

            Page 2 held the next of kin and emergency contact information. If someone is listed on this page, they are the unfortunate loved ones who receive a visit from a well-dressed or uniformed member to inform them a military member is either missing or killed while serving their country.

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;

           Second, have I updated my SGLI?

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

            SGLI stands for Servicemembers Group Life Insurance. Similar to most group insurance plans, this policy is in effect only while serving our country. This policy is in effect for 120 days after retirement or the last day of the month the contract expires.
           
      
      
    
    
                    &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;

            Group retirement accounts can be contributed while employed, but are frozen until retirement age once the employment ends. This one size fits all does not adequately prepare our military personnel for retirement.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;

&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;

           One often overlooked factor in retirement planning is insurability. Benefits of serving include a good diet, regular exercise, and physical requirements to continue military service. Aches and pains, chronic conditions, and other medical conditions are documented to be presented to the Department of Veterans Affairs for financial compensation as a result of military service. Arduous duty or combat injuries contribute to a disability rating for a monthly income for the rest of the servicemember’s life. Especially during the final six to nine months of their career, most individuals are instructed to get every condition documented in their medical record.

           Our health and age purchase life insurance products. Whether we realize it or not, we are all faced with our mortality at one point in our lives.
